Below the Surface: Music by Women Composers

Presented by Ensemble for These Times

E4TT performs works by a diverse group of ten of today's women composers in a hybrid concert. Purchase tickets for in-person attendance or RSVP to watch online on YouTube:

The highlight of the program will be the World Premiere of a COVID-delayed commissioned song cycle, “Below the Surface,” by Canadian-born, Scotland-based Call for Scores composer, Emily Doolittle (b. 1972) for soprano and piano, to texts by Bay Area poets Rachel Richardson (b. 1979) and Rella Lossy (1934-1996), along with nine other works by women composers:

  • 2020 Opera America Discovery Grant for Female Composers Recipient Lisa Bielawa (b. 1968);
  • Chinese-American composer Du Yun (b. 1977);
  • 2014 Guggenheim Fellow Elena Ruehr (b. 1963);
  • 2004 Guggenheim Fellow, Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz (b. 1964);
  • Emerging Puerto-Rican-born composer Angélica Negrón (b. 1981)
  • Four alumnae of the Gabriela Lena Frank Academic of Music: Akshaya Avril Tucker (b. 1992), Korean-American Jungyoon Wie (b. 1990), Seo Yoon (Soyoona) Kim (b. 1988) and Chinese composer Manjing Zhang (b. 1991).

The concert will be performed at the Center for New Music for attendance in person by socially distanced, vaccinated, masked attendees. For those who are more distant, prefer not to attend in person or are unvaccinated, the concert will be live-streamed on YouTube.

All tickets are fully refundable up to one day before the concert.
