TWO World Premiers
Performance September 22
Jean Ahn, is Director of the very unique Ensemble Ari, a fabulous group of artists who began performing together in October 2014. Ensemble Ari is renowned throughout the Bay Area as musicians who have brought international acclaim with world-wide musical performances and accomplishments, both individually and with the Ensemble.

You do not want to miss the concert in their upcoming performance at 2:30 pm in Faye Spanos Concert Hall, on Sunday September 22, 2019.

“Ari” is a Korean word with multiple meanings: big river, wisdom and beauty. It reflects the range of music that these wonderful musicians are able to showcase in their performances. This classical ensemble is a group of Korean American musicians in the Bay Area who want to bridge Korea and other communities through western instruments while honoring Korean history and culture, particularly with work composed or arranged by their Director/Composer Jean Ahn.

The remarkable artists in Ensemble Ari are Heeguen Song, violin (Associate Concertmaster of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra); Jiwon Evelyn Kwark, violin, (Associate Concertmistress of the Berkeley Symphony), Sarah Hong, cello, (award winning artist and member of over 5 musical ensembles and groups) and Sharon Lee Kim, piano (professor of music at Saint Mary’s College of California).

The Director of Ensemble Ari is a composer of such a wide range of musical work. Her creative output includes works ranging from solo instruments to full orchestra, as well as choral, dance and electroacoustic music. Recent awards for her compositions include 1st prize from the Renée Fisher Award, the Korean National Music Composers Award and the UC Berkeley’s De Lorenzo Prize. Her music has been featured many times as commissioned pieces.

Most notably the program will include the World Premier of a commissioned work from Michael Lee, Ghost Break Dance for Violin and Cello. The composer describes that “Rhythm will be the driving force in his new work while exploring new sounds and aleatoric techniques in several sections of the work.” In addition to works by Bach and Haydn, the Ensemble Ari program will include Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka, with the World Premier arrangement by Jean Ahn. The program will also include Flashback, composed by Jean Ahn.

Tickets are $25 and are available in the lobby of Faye Spanos Concert Hall at UOP starting at 2:00 pm, 30 minutes before the concert. Students of any age are admitted free.

The audience is invited to meet the musicians at a reception following the concert.
