Once beloved by princes and paupers, the viola da gamba soothed souls in a bygone era. Even by Johann Sebastian Bach’s lifetime, the gamba was fast becoming a relic. Yet late in his career, Bach was inspired to put together three sonatas for gamba and harpsichord—pieces that have formed the cornerstone of the modern gamba revival.
