Girolamo Fantini: Sounding the Trumpet in a Warlike and Also Musical Way (Baroque Trumpet Masterclass)

Description: Before the 1638 publication of Girolamo Fantini’s Modo per imparare a sonare di tromba, the trumpet was not seen as an instrument to be included in the sort of music making other instruments of the time took for granted. His valuable publication not only served as a tutorial for articulation and other aspects of trumpet playing, but also included roughly fifty pieces for trumpet. These pieces represent what was a new approach of learning and playing the trumpet in a manner that was “no longer haphazardly, as was previously the custom, but with the real foundation like the other perfect instruments”.  His use of articulation variety and the demands of musical phrasing were instrumental in “that utmost perfection, which until now has never been achieved.” Continuing with some of the concepts of symbolism from June’s trumpet presentation “Sound an Alarm!”, participants are invited to prepare selections from the following list (music will be provided in advance):

Prima sonata di Tromba

Sonata detta del Vitelli

Sonata detta del Nero

Sonata detta la Panicarola

Sonata detta del Malespina

Balletto detto il Lunati

Balletto detto dello Spada
