Karla Ekholm

I love teaching and exploring how each individual student learns best. I think that the learning process is fascinating regardless of the level of the student. I will push you if that is what you want, but for those who have no thoughts of a career in music, I can keep it fun and an enjoyable hobby. I am proud of the fact that I have students who have stayed with me over the course of decades.

I've worked professionally as a bassoonist for over 30 years. My true love is playing in opera and in chamber orchestras; I'm principal bassoon of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and Pacific Chamber Symphony, and for 20 years toured the U.S. with San Francisco Opera's touring company, Western Opera. I also enjoy doing educational outreach with my quintet. As a freelancer I've played with virtually every group in and around the Bay Area, including San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet. I am one of 7 featured in the documentary, "Freeway Philharmonic."
