The Peacemakers – the newest composition from Welsh composer Karl Jenkins – received its world premiere performance at Carnegie Hall on Martin Luther King Day (January 16th), conducted by Jenkins himself. The work sets to music words of peace and humility by the great luminaries of history, including Dr. King, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, as well as the Bible, Quran, Hindu scriptures, and more.
The release and concert come in the wake of a soldout New York City performance of the composer’s The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, which was given to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The concert was the culmination of a worldwide Global Sing for Peace campaign, in which over 50 organizations in 13 countries - 16 States in the U.S. alone - performed either The Armed Man or René Clausen’s Memorial.
The music itself features Jenkins’ unique blend of old and new composition techniques and traditional and exotic instrumentation. The musical forces involved are diverse: the London Symphony Orchestra, the Rundfunkchor Berlin, the CBSO Youth Chorus, and the 1,000-member Really Big Chorus. Soloists range from violin and flute to bass guitar and saxophone, as well as a number of ethnic instruments such as the bansuri and uilleann pipe. The end result is a sound that embraces all musical forms and styles, perfectly matched to the texts which call for inclusion, tolerance and universal brotherhood.
