The composer-focused Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music has announced its 2019 season. On the roster: the usual commissions and composers-in-residence, as well as an increased emphasis on works by female composers.

Running July 28–Aug. 11, the Festival’s 57th season is bookended by two major programs. Opening night features the world premiere of Kristin Kuster’s When There Are Nine, a symphonic work, in collaboration with Roomful of Teeth, inspired by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Two weeks later, the Festival wraps up with an evening dedicated to trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, one of the dozen composers-in-residence at Cabrillo this summer.

Along the way, a jam-packed lineup of guest artists drop in, from harpist Sarah Fuller in the West Coast premiere of a Tan Dun concerto to the return of Cabrillo-regular Anna Clyne. Notable this year, more than half of the season’s featured composers are women.

Continuing traditions, including a “pay-what-you-can” community night and an afternoon family concert, are renewed, and the Festival’s longstanding Conductors/Composers Workshop hosts another class of young professionals. New for 2019: an hour-long singing technique workshop, free and open to the public.
