Born 100 years ago, alto saxophonist Charlie Parker was one of the definitive innovators of 20th century music. "Bird," as he was known, revolutionized jazz, setting the stage for John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman - and for a raft of 21st century jazz innovators, including alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa (a perennial DownBeat poll topper) and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington (winner of multiple GRAMMY awards). Their new project, titled "Fly Higher," pays tribute to Bird by exploring his bebop-era repertoire, transforming Parker's breakneck tunes alongside their own modern compositions.
