METAMORPHOSES

Prokofiev’s mastery of cultural and political elements reaches it’s apotheosis in his visionary Symphony No. 5.

The program opens with Moncayo’s Huapango which celebrates zapateado dance traditions of Mexico, which will be performed by local dance group Esperanza del Valle along with the orchestra.

Massenet’s breathtakingly beautiful Meditation from Thais and Saint-Saëns’ thrillingly virtuosic Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso will feature Julian Rhee, 1st place winner of the 2020 Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition, first prize winner of the 2018 Johansen International Competition in Washington D.C, and prize winner of the 2018 Irving M. Klein International String Competition where he also won Best Performance of the Commissioned Work and the Pablo Casals Prize for the best performance of solo Bach.

SOLOIST

JULIAN RHEE, VIOLIN

Violinist Julian Rhee has been establishing himself as a prominent musician and performer across the United States. He studied with Almita and Roland Vamos as a scholarship recipient at the Music Institute of Chicago Academy.

Most recently, Julian attended the Heifetz Institute in summer 2019 as a member of the Institute's prestigious Ashkenasi/Kirshbaum Chamber Music Seminar and currently is a 2019-20 Heifetz Touring Artist.

Along with playing in many competitions and receiving substantial scholarships, Julian was the First Prize winner of the Johansen International Competition in Washington DC. He also received the Second Prize, the Solo Bach, Commissioned Work, and the Elaine H. Klein Prize at the Irving M. Klein International String Competition in 2018. These awards are what certified his status and created this opportunity for him to join our very own Santa Cruz Symphony.

Julian will be playing with the Santa Cruz Symphony for Saint-Saëns's "Introduction"/"Rondo Capriccioso" and Massemet's "Méditation from Thaïs," come check it out for yourself!

ESPERANZA DEL VALLE

Esperanza del Valle, a folklorico dance company, has been dedicated to the dissemination, preservation, and performance of the rich traditional dance forms of Mexico. Since 1980, Esperanza del Valle has strived to cultivate and promote pride and understanding of Mexican culture through its rich folklorico dances rooted in the merging of indigenous, European, and African heritages.
