UC Alumni Chorus Presents a “Mass-Up”

Paul Kotapish on November 12, 2019
The UC Alumni Chorus Directed by Dr. Mark Sumner

Director Mark Sumner wrangles the thriving 100-member UC Alumni Chorus, an orchestra, featured soprano Michele Kennedy, and additional guest singers from the Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco, UC Berkeley’s Perfect Fifth, and the UC Men’s and Women’s Chorales to present their “Mass-Up,” a respectful “mashup” of classic choral music sampled from 1,000 years of Eucharist and Requiem Mass settings.

The concert on Nov. 17 at UC Berkeley’s Hertz Hall promises “a seamless presentation of glorious excerpts performed by a massive chorus and orchestra.” Included in this spiritual kaleidoscope will be movements from works by Richafort, Duruflé, Poulenc, Vivaldi, Bach, Rutter, Verdi, Britten, Mozart, Lassus, Berlioz, Dvořák, and Elgar, among others.

There will be a second performance on Nov. 24 at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco without the full orchestra.
