Opus Ultimum

Organist Jonathan Dimmock’s choral ensemble has flown under the radar for a while now, and one of the reasons is that it was forced to take a year off in 2010-11. But it’s back now and that’s good news for music fans and people who could use a breather or “mental health day.” This is a fine ensemble of professional singers, striving, in their own words, “to create experiences that are emotional, spiritual, and contemplative.”

And while you might be tempted to dismiss a concert of sacred polyphony as just a niche enthusiasm you don’t have time for, the reality is that the beautiful music AVE will sing on this program was developed to help seekers and people of faith to pause, regroup, find strength within. And it’s no less effective at doing that because some of it is 500 years old. You have to be ready to receive it, but if you are, this concert of last masterworks by some of history’s great composers is a refreshing find, and an all-too-rare opportunity to take some time for yourself.
