Opera fans have a good few weeks ahead if they haven’t decamped for summer vacations. First up, this weekend, is the Merola Opera Program with Dominick Argento’s quirky, imaginative Postcards From Morocco. In spite of the serious themes lying behind the opera (human cruelty and so forth), the foreground is dominated by surreal situations and characters that are often funny. There are bits of operetta style thrown into the music and the inclusion of an orchestrated version of Gabriel Fauré and André Messager’s hilarious Wagner sendup Souvenirs de Bayreuth is entirely in keeping with the tone of the opera as a whole. With the young Merolini cast, this opera promises to be entertaining indeed.
