Adrianna Khoo

Adrianna teaches Suzuki Method cello in San Francisco and San Mateo.

With a passion for teaching, Adrianna believes that music lessons are a vehicle for instilling joy and growing confidence.  Adrianna pioneered Suzuki Cello Programs at the Carey School in San Mateo, Sycamore Strings Academy of Livermore and the first Suzuki recognized school in Hong Kong.

She regularly coaches cellists at public schools and community youth orchestras from San Francisco to Cupertino in addition to teaching private lessons.  With attention to inclusion, Adrianna guest teaches at the El Sistema inspired program, Harmony Project.  She has given teacher training workshops in the San Ramon School District and also taught some of the first master classes at Cello Kids - Cellobello.com’s free worldwide initiative to continue lessons for students and teacher observers online during quarantine.

Her students’ highlights include winning command performances in the CMEA Music Festival and earning positions in the CODA All State Honors Orchestras, as well as principal cellist seats in Palo Alto community honors orchestras. They have performed with the Peninsula Youth Orchestra of San Mateo, Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, where Adrianna served as a coach. Students were invited to a special class performance during the Matsumoto 2013 Suzuki World Conference. Their annual studio benefit concerts have raised money for the WHO, Nova, ASPCA, World Wildlife Federation and Japan and Philippines disaster relief.

As a performer, Adrianna appreciates eclectic programming. Recent highlights include producing the Red Cello Quartet’s benefit for the International Rescue Committee San Jose with music from Mendelssohn to Lady Gaga, and joining the Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra’s Forbidden City tour with Celtic dancers in Beijing. Adrianna has produced and performed rock and jazz programs at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum, SESAC Showcase at the Rockwood Music Hall, (NY), and The Fringe Club and City Hall, (Hong Kong). As a classically trained orchestra player, Adrianna has performed with the New England Philharmonic, Plymouth and Richmond County orchestras on the east coast. She also served as the principal cellist of the University of Southern California Community Orchestra and Sacramento Youth symphonies, and assistant principal at the South Bay Symphony and University of California Berkeley orchestras.

Using the Suzuki Method, Adrianna believes all children can learn when teachers and parents team up to create a nurturing environment. Students learn music using the same most natural techniques they employ when learning their native language. Students take weekly private lessons and have the chance to grow up in a community of cellists through monthly groups, community service performances, regional conferences and other cello playing parties.
