Calling all Francophiles to join us on the first stop of the San Jose Wind Symphony’s 2019-2020 season “European Road Trip.”
“Vive La France” begins on a high note – literally! – as we welcome the great French flautist Isabelle Chapuis, performing Bizet’s Carmen Fantasy. Born in Dijon, France, she studied with several of France's best-known flutists, including Jean-Pierre Rampal and attended the Conservatoire national de musique in Paris.
Isabelle relocated to California, where she was appointed Lecturer-in-Flute in the Department of Music (now the School of Music & Dance) at San Jose State University. Isabelle taught both undergraduate and graduate flute students for 33 years, until her retirement in 2008, earning an award for “outstanding teaching” from the President of the University. In 2014, Isabelle received a letter of commendation from the U.S. Secretary of Education, recognizing her as "one of the United States' most influential teachers of music"
Her many performing roles include serving as Principal Flute of Opera San Jose and Principal Flute with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. As a flute soloist, Isabelle has performed flute concertos with numerous orchestras in the U.S. and Europe. She has recorded a virtuoso Sinfonia Concertante with American flute soloist Robert Stallman and the Czech Chamber Orchestra.
She served as Co-Musical Director of the Festival of French Music of the Alliance Francaise of Silicon Valley in Mountain View. The national music magazine Flute Talk published a 12 page story on Isabelle’s career in 2014.
In May, 2015, she served in the jury of the Concours des Prix de Flute at the Conservatoire de Marseille.
Isabelle is a Sankyo Artist and plays both gold and silver Sankyo flutes.

In addition to our soloist, you will also enjoy outstanding works by Camille Saint- Saëns, Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel, as well as highlights from Les Miserables conducted by Dr Edward C. Harris. “Allez les Bleus!”
