Trevor Dunn Phillip Greenlief CD Release Party plus Sally Gates

Presented by Center for New Music

Trevor Dunn (contrabass) and Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds) celebrate the release Twenty Seven on Riverworm Records. The title of the new album reveals the years they have been playing together. Their work has always focused on spontaneous improvisation - a long-term conversation of imagination and the ingenuity of their approach to their respective instruments.

Sally Gates opens the show with the premiere of Thought and Terraform for solo guitar. ‘Thought & Terraform’ explores the hallucinatory nature of reality, deriving themes from surrealism, quantum physics, and science fiction. A work for solo guitar, these themes are developed and elaborated upon through improvisational passages.

On a visceral level, the composition incorporates the exuberance and reflection of her experience returning to New Zealand after four years in New York, isolated and cut off from home due to the pandemic.
