Ragtime the Musical

Presented by Lyric Theatre of San Jose

Ragtime the Musical

LYRIC THEATRE, in our 50th year of high quality live musical theater productions, offers a classic by Flaherty, Ahrens, and McNally.  Fully staged, with orchestra.

Ragtime, a distinctly American musical style, is a synthesis of African syncopation and European classical music, especially the marches of John Philip Sousa. Ragtime was popularized during the early 20th century by composers such as Scott Joplin. The songs heard in the film The Sting (1973) brought renewed interest in ragtime.

Set among the racial tensions, infidelity and violence in early 1900s New York City, Ragtime tells the story of three groups: African-Americans, represented by Coalhouse Walker Jr., a Harlem musician; white upper-class suburbanites, represented by Mother, the family matriarch; and Jewish Immigrants, represented by Tateh.

Ragtime, the Musical, was nominated for 13 Tony awards in 1998.

Ragtime is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
