Duo Chiaroscuro - Love and Dreams

Presented by Old First Concerts

The duo explores the play of light and shadow in art and music, with the German pianist Johanna Tarcson and the Argentinian singer Tristana Ferreyra-Rantalaiho, both residents of the Bay Area. Their program consists of works by Franz Schubert, Lili Boulanger, Ernest Chausson, Henri Duparc, Emile Paladilhe, Claude Debussy, Peter Lieberson, Carlos Guastavino and Alberto Ginastera.

Tristana and Johanna met during their Master’s studies at San Francisco State University.

Tristana Ferreyra-Rantalaiho is a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from San Francisco State University where she studied with Christine Brandes, and an undergraduate degree in choral conducting from Universidad Católica Argentina, where she studied with Néstor Andrenacci. She loves to premiere vocal works by new composers as a soloist and with choirs. Apart from her classical music repertoire, she has sung Argentinian tango, bossa nova, and Kurt Weill. She has worked as a singer and choral conductor in Argentina and Finland, relocated to the Bay Area with her family, and is a passionate musician, vocalist, and voice teacher. In California, she sang in Convivium and is now in the 21V ensemble. She placed second at Cal Western Regional Student Auditions at the K Advanced Classical Level of The National Association Teachers of Singing (NATS). She has her own private studio and teaches voice at different non-profit organizations and music schools in the Bay Area.

Johanna Tarcson is a German-Hungarian pianist from Germany. During her Bachelor at Musikhochschule Trossingen in Germany and Master at San Francisco State University she studied with Dr. Roger Woodward, among others, and earned prizes and scholarships. In many masterclasses with renowned pianists she learned a refined repertoire. As a piano teacher in the bay area in the previous year she accomplished to teach many students. Playing with other musicians is for her a natural extension of the work as a pianist and has been her favorite task. As a soloist she performed in many concerts in Germany.
