The San Francisco Choral Society and Artistic Director Robert Geary open the 2022 season with the world premiere of To a Lost Year, an exciting new commission by Taiwanese composer Chiayu Hsu, and Handel’s choral masterpiece Dixit Dominus. Selected from nearly one hundred applicants as part of the San Francisco Choral Society’s commissioning project, Chiayu Hsu becomes the seventh composer over the last fifteen years to write a new choral work for the organization. The work, inspired by the events of the COVID-19 pandemic, explores the unsettled emotions experienced at the beginning of the outbreak and the many lives lost before looking toward a brighter and more hopeful future.
