The Necklace

Presented by Stanford University, Department of Music

Silhouette of a woman wearing a necklace.

In a short one-act opera encapsulating the tensions and challenges of humanities and sciences coexisting in a university setting, a Lecturer in English, overwhelmingly infatuated with a Professor of Genetics, both debate the essence and relevance of their disciplines, which becomes a metaphor for their star-crossed relationship, as parodied by a retelling of the Tristan and Isolde love story. Composed by Haris Vrontos with a libretto by John Ioannidis, a Professor of Medicine at Stanford.
