Beethoven, Bassoon, and Ballet

Presented by Symphony Parnassus

Our 2023-2024 season winter concert features guest bassoonist and composer Paul Hanson in the premiere of his Transitions - Electric Bassoon Concerto.   "Hanson has brought the double reed instrument into areas where it’s seldom, if ever, gone before, combining a commanding improvisational sensibility with funk, classical and world music influences,” wrote Andrew Gilbert, DOWNBEAT Magazine.

Also featured on the program is Darius Milhaud's brilliant jazz-influenced work, La Création du Monde, a chamber ballet for 18 musicians composed in 1923 following his visit to America and New York City jazz venues.  Leonard Bernstein summarized: “The Creation of the World emerges not as a flirtation but as a real love affair with jazz.”

The concert will close with Beethoven's masterful Fourth Symphony (1806).

Join us for our 33rd season winter concert on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at 3:00 PM. The concert will take place at the Taube Atrium Theater, located at the Veterans Memorial Building, 401 Van Ness, San Francisco, CA 94102.
