Beethoven, Milhaud and Hanson: World Premier Electronic Bassoon Concerto "Transitions"

Presented by Symphony Parnassus

Symphony Parnassus is thrilled to announce the premiere of Transitions, a concerto for electric bassoon and orchestra by Bay Area musician Paul Hanson. Hanson has worked with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Jon Batiste, Cirque Du Soleil, Wayne Shorter, Ray Charles and is now collaborating with longtime mentor and teacher Stephen Paulson (principal bassoonist of the San Francisco Symphony) to realize this boundary-pushing composition. On January 28th Paulson will conduct Symphony Parnassus in this ambitious work with Hanson as the soloist. Symphony Parnassus is a longtime established community orchestra in San Francisco with a long history of adventurous programming like Grace Williams' Trumpet Concerto, Pablo Estigarribia's Tres Tangos Concertantes for Piano and Orchestra and Ethel Smyth's Overture to the Wreckers.

To complement this innovative work, the concert will open with Milhaud's "Creation of the World," one of the first classical pieces to adopt and quote the jazz style, and conclude with the always delightful 4th Symphony by Beethoven.

Please join us at 3:00pm on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Taube Atrium Theater.
