Classical Crossover: classical and jazz music performed live on Zoom

Presented by Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival

"Classical Crossover" is an online, live-streamed concert featuring pianist Ben Harper and violinist Mads Tolling. They will be performing classical works by Rachmaninoff, Kreisler, and Brahms, alongside jazz standards, works by the late Chick Corea, and original compositions! Each of the performers began their training learning classical repertoire, before branching out into various genres of popular and jazz music. Pianist Ben Harper is a native of Trinity County, California, and has attended live concerts of the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival as a young child. He is one of the first guest musicians on the series to have such a life-long connection to the festival. His performance will feature some music of Brahms, which he describes as an idea “crossover” example, with “characteristic use of complex counterpoint and overlapping harmonies...dense chords and cross-rhythms below a simple melody.” He is currently a student at UC Berkeley. Violinist Mads Tolling, originally from Denmark, has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for over a decade, and has enjoyed a wide and varied career as a musician, composer, and the front man for several local groups. He has performed with the Turtle Island String Quartet, Mads Tolling and the Mads Men, and currently plays with Bob Weir and the Wolf Bros.. He has won two Grammy awards for his recordings.
