From CBC News:

American composer and pianist Philip Glass has been named the eleventh recipient of The Glenn Gould Prize at a ceremony Tuesday morning at Toronto's Koerner Hall.

Sometimes referred to as the "Nobel prize of the arts," the award is presented biennially to "an individual for a unique lifetime contribution that has enriched the human condition through the arts," according to the Glenn Gould Foundation.

The 78-year-old composer joins a prestigious list of previous winners that includes Leonard Cohen, Pierre Boulez, and Yo-Yo Ma.

A frequent visitor to the Bay Area, including at performances of his operas both in San Francisco and Berkeley, Glass appeared on a San Francisco Performances program last month with The Études, and currently he is on an extensive tour with San Francisco's Kronos Quartet.
