JOB TITLE: Music Director/Conductor

REPORTS TO: VSO Board of Directors

JOB SUMMARY: The Music Director/Conductor is responsible for ensuring that the repertoire and performances of the VSO meet the long-range artistic, strategic, and educational goals of the orchestra.

The Music Director/Conductor assists in the marketing and promotion of VSO and its scheduled events by being available for public appearances, speaking engagements, and personal visits with patrons, donors, and selected members of the community.

The Music Director/Conductor selects repertoire and guest artists, subject to the available resources of the VSO, as specified by the Board of Directors.

The Music Director/Conductor serves as the principal conductor, rehearsing and conducting all performances.

The Music Director/Conductor is responsible for auditioning musicians and ensuring the high artistic quality of every performance.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working with the Music Committee and the Treasurer, choose appropriate and affordable repertoire for each season. Coordinate programming for all concerts.

Choose guest artists and soloists for each concert.

Subscribe to and aid in formulating short and long-term artistic and educational goals for the VSO’s Strategic Plan.

Work with the VSO’s Publicist to coordinate public appearances, interviews, community outreach, and rebroadcasts.

Rehearse and conduct all subscription and special concerts.

Audition musicians for open chairs. Supervise and coordinate with Personnel Manager to hire high quality musicians for each concert.

Supervise Music Librarian and Stage Manager and coordinate their activities to meet organizational needs for each concert.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Exceptional musicianship and conducting skills.

Exceptional and demonstrated leadership skills.

A minimum of five years of professional conducting
experience.

Demonstrated success in audience and volunteer relations, orchestra development and audience growth.

Strong interpersonal relations and communication skills.
