Smuin Ballet: The Christmas Ballet

Smuin Ballet avoids the whole Nutcracker scrum every year by doing a program they call The Christmas Ballet. It’s the opposite of traditional, despite its 20th anniversary this year. The program is playful, sexy, and completely contemporary, with a premiere this year from Robert Dekkers, the artistic director of Post: Ballet. Choreographer-in-residence Amy Seiwart is represented by Sleigh Ride! and I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm (Stuhr Remix). There’s the tap-danced “Bells of Dublin,” Val Caniparoli’s “Jingle Bells Mambo,” and a mix of contemporary costumes. If you’re looking from a respite from the Land of Sweets, this just might be it.
