Choral Prize and Surprise

Michael Zwiebach on May 10, 2011

Volti's odyssey through new and contemporary choral pieces continues this Sunday with the premiere of Matthew Barnson's Genesis. Barnson won this year's Choral Arts Laboratory residency prize, which Volti awards to a composer under 35 years old each year.

Barnson's piece treats three versions of the Genesis story, each with a subversive change to the story that affects the outcome. Suppose, for example, Adam refused to eat the apple?

As always, there's more than one premiere on the program, so if you like a bit of mystery and surprise along with really fine singing, you should have this concert on your schedule.
